Bluegrass Guitar Workshop with Michael Daves

  • Buzz Ware Village Center 2119 The Highway Wilmington, DE, 19810 United States (map)

Join us for a rare opportunity to study with Michael Daves, heralded by the New York Times as a “leading light of the New York bluegrass scene.” Known for his high-energy "rafter-lifting" performances and deep pedagogical expertise, Michael offers a workshop that goes beyond the notes to capture the true spirit and "drive" of traditional bluegrass.

This session is designed for guitarists looking to move past rote memorization and develop a more powerful, soulful, and improvisational approach to the instrument.

Workshop Highlights & Topics

  • The Engine of Bluegrass: Masterful Rhythm Learn the secrets of the "right-hand drive." Michael will break down the percussive pick strokes and dynamic control needed to propel a band or duo forward, including the timing and "bounce" of the iconic G-run.

  • Melody-Driven Flatpicking Move beyond scale patterns and learn how to weave licks around the vocal melody. We’ll explore crosspicking techniques and how to use "closed position" scales to navigate the entire neck with confidence.

  • Tone, Grit, and Edge Bluegrass isn't meant to be polite. Michael will demonstrate how to use pick attack, blue notes, and string bending to achieve a "thick" acoustic tone that cuts through even the loudest jam session.

  • The Vocal Connection As a master of the "high lonesome" style, Michael will share strategies for self-accompaniment—showing you how to maintain a rock-solid rhythm while singing lead or harmony.

  • Fearless Improvisation Discover how to take "inspired left turns" in your solos. Learn how to integrate experimental ideas and chromatic runs while keeping your feet firmly planted in traditional bluegrass soil.
